The Secure Spot by D-Link is not only an Internet filtering program but it is a full Security Suite that includes Anti-Virus, Spam prevention, and more.  It’s also as much hardware (a small box you plug in between the router and the modem) as it is software and so it is a little outside the scope of this review.  However, we thought this was a good product to include in the review because more and more homes have multiple PCs and wireless networks where your child’s friend may bring a laptop into your home.

The D-Link Secure Spot had the same effectiveness we found from Bsafe because it is powered by Bsecure Technology.  Many users may find it a little more intimidating since this is a hardware device.  We went slow and followed the setup instructions and had no problems (We recommend that users upgrade the firmware). We found a large note to call support with any problems when we opened the box.

The interface was newer than Bsafe’s and had options to  block more IM and P2P programs.

The only problem we uncovered was a low default setting that allowed the box to be unplugged and complete get around filtering and reporting.  We followed up with support and were shown the setting to increase to require that both the box and the “thin client” (a small bit of software that allow your pc to talk to the Secure Spot) be up and running to allow internet access.  It seems you’d lose Internet access at the highest settings if you have a laptop loaded with the thin-client and take a laptop to another network (say from home to work). We would have liked more instruction on the setup to help us make the right settings based on our home situation.  For parents with teens, either lock your network up in the closet or put your settings on the highest level.  It might be helpful to call a support tech and think through your situation.
