We were very pleased with this FREE Internet Filter.   K9’s web filtering  performed very well in our tests.   It was easy to setup and customizing the settings were very intuitive.  We recommend parents increase the protection level to its highest settings.

We were very pleased with this FREE Internet Filter. K9's web filtering performed very well in our testing. It was very easy to setup, customizing the settings was very intuitive.  We recommend parents increase the protection level to its highest settings. The default protection level does not block abortion, homosexual or uncategorized sites. Should a site be blocked by mistake, you can override it by entering the password from the block screen. There are also white-list and black-list options to make the filter perfect for your situation.

The filter may not be strong enough for parents of older children who are more likely to encounter inappropriate or dangerous material.  Getting a report of all activity required the user to be on the machine where the filter resides, as opposed to other programs that allow viewing the logs from a remote location.  K9 also had no alert or notification system in place and did not block Peer-to-Peer (P2P) or Instant Message (IM) programs. Any program that does not restrict these programs should not be considered for teens.

However, K9 removes the "cost" excuse and is a good fit for younger children and for responsible adults that want to stop accidental exposure to offensive Web sites. Why is it FREE?  That was our first question, too.  they are "not a consumer company," according to the Blue Coat Web site. They are a business-to-business tech company that saw "...a unique opportunity to bring something extremely important to local communities and families. In a significant departure from our tried-and-true enterprise business, Blue Coat decided to make K9 Web Protection a consumer product, with the goal of helping to provide a ‘Family-safe Internet'."  We applaud them for doing so.
